Amla oil is wonderful for hair because it helps your lustrous locks grow faster. It is considered as one of the oldest natural hair conditioners of the world. This therapeutic oil nourishes your scalp, strengthens the hair follicles, and prevents hair fall.
Basically, it is derived from Indian gooseberry or Emblic myrobalan, commonly known as amla fruit. Its scientific name is Emblica officinalis.
It is extensively used in Ayurvedic medicine because amla is rich in vitamin C, tannins, polyphenols, and flavonoids.
You can apply amla hair oil on your scalp and hair either before or after washing your tresses. When massaging the scalp with this oil (preferably warm), leave it on the scalp for at least an hour. You may also consider leaving on your hair overnight; the oil promotes sound sleep as well.
In case you do not like the smell of this herbal oil then you may add some other fragrant oil such as rosemary or lavender essential oil in it. Regular application of amla oil can reduce hair loss and help avoid fungal infections on the scalp.
It rejuvenates dull and damaged hair. Plus, amla oil makes your hair soft, shiny and adds texture and bounce to your hair.
It also prevents dandruff and premature graying of hair as it tends to darken your hair. Furthermore, as this oil has a cooling effect, it helps keep your mind calm.
While choosing amla hair oil, though, make sure you read its ingredients before buying because several products merely contain amla extract and dilute it with mineral oils as the base.
Apart from amla oil, you can use hair packs prepared from amla powder. You can purchase this powder online or get it from an Indian grocery store. Here are a few hair care recipes that promote healthy hair growth.
- Prepare a paste by adding a little coconut oil in two teaspoons of amla powder. Those suffering from hair loss can use a teaspoon of fenugreek powder, too.
Next, heat a cup of organic coconut oil along with this paste at low heat until it becomes somewhat brownish. Let it sit for about two to three hours. Finally, massage this oil on your hair and scalp for about five minutes and then apply it on your hair. Wash it off after an hour or so.

- You can mix amla powder with a neutral conditioner as well. Moreover, you may add other herbs like bramhi or shikakai powder in the recipe to stimulate hair growth and improve the condition of your tresses. If you have curly hair, you may want to add a tablespoon of flax seed or aloe vera gel, too.
- When dealing with dandruff, use a combination of amla powder, lemon juice, and a carrier oil on your hair for about 20 minutes and then rinse it off.
- You can mix sesame oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, avocado oil, olive oil, neem oil, castor oil, apple cider vinegar, henna powder, soap nut powder, dried herbs, coconut milk, honey, etc. in amla powder to create homemade hair care recipes with a good consistency.
These hair recipes are likely to give better results when used on wet hair. In addition, it is suggested to soak amla powder in hot water overnight before using it.
